Chapter 17
Lonnie collected the rifles and shotguns dropped by Sharpe’s men and loaded them into the sail-wagon. As he was securing the tarp, Marge approached him.
“I suppose you’re wondering about my ex-husband and everything.”
“Not really,” Lonnie replied. “That’s none of my business. What I am wondering about, though, is where you learned to handle a pistol like that.”
“After the judge granted the divorce, I was afraid that Mike would come after me. I had a restraining order against him, but that was just a piece of paper. I wanted to be able to protect myself if he did find me. After the divorce, I went back to my maiden name, even though I knew that wouldn’t keep him for very long. I just didn’t want to use his name any longer than I had to. The judge was very understanding and helped to speed up the process. I never dreamed that I would run into Mike out here.” She paused and physically shuddered at the memories. “So I bought a pistol and took shooting lessons.”
“Well, whoever it was that taught you, they did a good job.” It was his turn to pause. “You said you bought a pistol?”
“Yes, a nine-millimeter.”
“So where is it? You didn’t mention it being in your things when we left.”
“When we got to my house, it had been gone through, if you’ll remember.”
“Right.”
“Whoever it was must have found my pistol and taken it.”
“Why didn’t you mention it then?”
“I didn’t see the need to. You and Eddie seemed well enough armed, I didn’t think it necessary to mention it. I knew the two of you would be able to protect me. And you stood up for me.” She touched his forearm. “Thank you.”
Lonnie mumbled something that sounded somewhat like a “You’re welcome” and went back to securing the tarp that he had already secured. When everything was secured to Lonnie’s liking, they all climbed aboard, with Lonnie and Eddie at the pedals. Marge took her place behind Eddie, where she had a good view of Lonnie. Although his head didn’t move much, Marge knew Lonnie’s eyes were constantly moving, missing little.
Four hours later, Lonnie called a halt. They all climbed down to stretch their legs and walk around. Lonnie found some rocks for a fire ring, then went into the woods and returned with some fire wood. Eddie got a fire going while Marge unwrapped some steaks. Lonnie brought the cast iron griddle over. While the wood was burning down to coals, the ever-present coffee pot was put on to heat. When the coals were ready, Lonnie set the griddle over them, waited a few minutes while it heated up, and put the steaks on it and got out his seasonings. After they ate lunch, they sat around sipping coffee and Lonnie smoked a cigar.
“I don’t think I’ve eaten as much steak in a week as I have in the last three days,” Marge said. “I like it.”
“We eat a lot of meat,” said Lonnie. “We usually
